Hoya sp. Gunung Gading

Hoya Sp. Gunung Gading

Hoya sp. Gunung Gading is a Hoya species discovered in the Gunung Gading National Park in Sarawak, Malaysia. The Gunung Gading is known for housing the rafflesia flower. The national park is also home to numerous Hoya species.

Hoya sp. Gunung Gading features large lovely leaves that are significantly distinct from other Hoya callistophylla clones. Hoya sp. Gunung Gading has MUCH more pronounced leaf veining, and the veins don't appear to deteriorate with age. Additionally, compared to other callistophylla clones, this plant's leaves are considerably thinner. Compared to other callistophyllas, these leaves almost have a "card-like" appearance. Hoya sp. Gunung Gading is also a very slow grower; patience is required in spades while growing this particular hoya.

When sun-stressed, this Hoya develops intense red-orange to dark red coloration, offsetting its veins, which look like they have been drawn with a Sharpie. The Hoya sp. Gunung Gading puts out pretty pink flowers, varying in tone from dark pink to maroon with white petals on top. The blooms are not fragrant but sometimes will give off a musty non-floral smell.

As the Hoya sp. Gunung Gading matures, its vines and leaves tend to become stiffer. This can become an issue since these plants can become top-heavy and result in breakage. It is essential to trim and train your Hoya sp. Gunung Gading on a trellis on a vine support system with proper support for its top.

Hoya sp. Gunung Gading Detail

Light Requirements:

  • You should cultivate Hoya sp. Gunung Gading in indirect sunshine. When growing H. sp. Gunung Gading indoors, utilize a space that gets shady sunlight.
  • Hoya sp. Gunung Gading develops spectacular colouration when sun stressed. However, waiting until your plant is well-established and content is recommended before proceeding with sun stressing.

Temperature Requirements:

  • Hoya sp. Gunung Gading cannot be grown in extremely hot or frigid climates. It is not hardy, and the foliage will burn and die if exposed to winter.
  • It can withstand continuous temperatures as low as 60°F, but anything more than 95°F will harm it.
  • During the winters, grow it in a heated space or a greenhouse, away from direct cold draughts or hot heater/AC gusts.

Humidity Requirements:

  • Hoya sp. Gunung Gading prefers high humidity, which can be anywhere between 60% and 80%. Regular household humidity levels cannot sustain it.
  • If you have them indoors, misting and sponging are advised during the winter. However, avoid keeping the leaves drenched in water because that promotes root and leaf rot. Humidifiers, wet pebble trays and misting will keep your Hoya sp. Gunung Gading happy.
  • Take great care with maintaining humidity levels since the Hoya sp. Gunung Gading can abruptly stop growing when humidity levels fluctuate.

Watering Requirements:

  • While all  Hoyas prefer dampness and humidity for growth, they cannot handle excess watering. Excessive moisture might cause root rot before you even realize it.
  • Your Hoya roots could rot if your potting combination tends to retain a lot of water, as with peaty mixtures.
  • Hoya sp. Gunung Gading is finicky with water. You can let the topsoil dry out before watering. Since this hoya is a slow grower, you do not need to water it much. However, don't let your hoya dry out for long periods.

Soil Requirements:

  • Well-draining, rough soil mixes are ideal for this Hoya.
  • You can mix your own potting soil from perlite, peat and hydrotone.
  • Ideally, you should request your specialty plant shop to provide you with a soil mix suitable for the Hoya sp. Gunung Gading.

Fertilizing Requirements:

  • Hoya sp. Gunung Gading is a slow-growing plant, and may need an extra boost from a fertilizer.

  • Choose a fertilizer formulated for tropical foliage plants and spray it on the leaves once a week during the growing season.

  • If you feel your Hoya is doing well and the fertilizer somewhat affects growth, discontinue use. You need to find what works for your Hoya sp. Gunung Gading since this Hoya is temperamental. There is no set guideline; you may nee dto establish some yourself.
