Hoya rangsan

Hoya Rangsan

Hoya rangsan is an epiphytic blooming plant native to Southeast Asia and Australia. It has narrow, oval waxy green leaves with greenish-yellow splotches. As the plant matures, the luxuriant leaves turn a pale yellow colour.

The Hoya rangsan does not grow very tall, and features beautiful variegation on its oval leaves. The slender, waxy leaves of this tropical houseplant have silvery or light green splotches and are deep green in colour. Each leaf has a different pattern of variegation.

After three to four months of adequate care, it also produces robust, sweet-smelling light yellow flowers. These flowers are pink and five-pointed; they grow in a starburst along this hoya’s vines.

The Rangsan has few plant-related issues, but it does have a few straightforward needs for a healthy, long life.

Care Summary:

Keep your Hoyas in bright light. A few hours of mellow direct sunlight might promote more blooms and faster growth. Hoyas can repeatedly bloom from the same flower stalk, known as a peduncle, thus avoid cutting off the peduncles. Hoyas frequently "abort" blossoms and new leaves, but do not be alarmed because they quickly recover. Instead, ensure the plant receives enough light and isn't over or under watered. Succulent leaves should be somewhat tender and the medium should be totally dry before watering to avoid overwatering.

Bright, indirect sunlight

Water once a week

Temperatures between 60-85 degrees F (16-29 degrees C)

60-70% humidity

Light, well draining soil

Hoya rangsan Care Detail

Light Requirements:

  • If Hoya rangsan doesn't receive enough sunlight, it could struggle to grow and will lose leaves.
  • Hoya rangsan also can lose its variegation patterns if it does not receive enough sunlight.
  • To maximise the potential for development, place it less than three feet from a window that faces south.
  • 6-8 hours of indirect sunlight is enough for its proper development.
  • During the winters, you can use artificial light to ensure that your hoya grows well during its dormancy phase.

Temperature Requirements:

  • All hoyas thrive well in temperatures that are nearest to their natural habitat.
  • A temperature range between 60-85 F is ideal for Hoya Rangsan.
  • During the winter season, you can use heating mats or maintain your thermostat at the above-mentioned range.
  • Keep your hoya away from cold drafts or areas that have air flow, for example near doorways.
  • Avoid exposing the plants to higher temperatures because the fading of the foliage's colour will hinder their growth. Protecting flowers from abrupt temperature changes is crucial for extensive flowering.

Humidity Requirements:

  • Hoyas all benefit from high humidity conditions. Hoya rangsan grows best in humidity ranges of 40-70%.
  • This plant can also tolerate low humidity levels for some time.
  • During the summer, the plant benefits from the occasional misting. Use a pebble tray or a tiny humidifier to keep humidity levels constant.

Watering Requirements:

  • As with all hoyas, Hoya rangsan does not do well with over-watering. Overwatering cause state plant to become water-stressed, causing damage to foliage and root rot.
  • Water your hoya when the soil is dry. However, care needs to be taken in order to not let the plant dry out entirely.
  • You can do the finger test to determine if the top two inches of soil are dry. Insert your finger upto the first digit into the potting soil. If the first digit of your finger does not encounter any moisture, it is time to water the plant.
  • Water more during the summers, which is when the plant is in its active growing phase and may require more water. Be careful not to overwater though!

Soil Requirements:

  • Epiphytes do not need much soil in the wild because they take in water and nutrients from the air with their exposed root system.
  • Soil mixes need to replicate somewhat of their natural habitat. You will require well-draining soil that is not compact and provides aeration to the roots.
  • Orchid, succulent, or an African Violet mix will be the best choice. Coarse coconut coir, perlite and peat moss can also be an ideal combination.

Fertilizing Requirements:

  • Hoya rangsan does not need much fertilizer. However, it will definitely appreciate a monthly boost from one of your choosing.
  • You can go for organic fertilizers that are balanced in nitrogen content, or you can get commercial mixes.
  • In the spring and summer, it would benefit from a monthly application of liquid fertiliser that has been diluted (to half its strength). In the winter months, you'll need to reduce the amount of food you give your plant.
  • To increase flower output before the blooming season, you can also apply a high phosphate plant food.
